Scrapbook (Haggadah) for Passover – part 2

Don't be alarmed, I didn't forget the lucky winner of the blog candy. The name of that lucky someone is posted at the end of the post.

Last time we braked for a Passover dinner, now after a good meal we can continue to look at the Haggadah. These next two pages are filled with funny faces photos!

A page with text only.

A page that has photos of mother and daughters.

Interactive pages: one with a flap that has some small photos in it. The other page has a small book that holds photos of all the members of the family.

These pages are all about singing! The song talks about different elements in Judaism that starts from 1 God. Each verse the numbers grow, for example 3 fathers (refers to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob), 4 mothers (Sara, Lea, Rebecca and Rachel), 10 commandments and so on. I included a family version to this song by adding relevant photos, starting with 1 mom, my mom!

The last page of the Haggadah is a family tree.

Thank you to all of you, my dear friends, for all your birthday wishes and your visits to my blog. It was a fabulous month and it was a pleasure sharing it with you. You really want to know who won the last blog candy right?

So... the  absolutely most definitely by far the greatest birthday candy goes to….

A special scrapbook (Haggadah) for Passover

Today is the last day of Passover. To celebrate this holiday as well as Easter, which is just around the corner, I wanted to share with you the special gift I gave my mom: a handmade Haggadah designed in scrapbooking style. Before I tell the significance of this gift a few words on what Haggadah is. Haggadah is the "instruction manual" for properly performing the Seder, the festive meal that is the highlight of the Passover festival. Haggadah means either "telling" or "narration" in Hebrew, and this refers to the fact that the central theme of the Haggadah is to tell or narrate the story of the Hebrews' Exodus from Egypt. The Haggadah consists of 15 steps or sections, within each step there are various rituals. The purpose of the Haggadah is to show that, like the Hebrews who listened and followed G-ds' will for them to leave their physical, political, and spiritual slavery in Egypt to eventually attain their freedom, in every generation, each individual and group - whether Jewish or from other faiths - has the potential to reach those same goals.

I made this Haggadah very special. I called it "Haggadah from Generation to Generation" with the intention of making it a family heirloom that will pass on in the family from generation to generation. It is all in Hebrew (from right to left) and I'm sorry I didn't translate it (it's very difficult).

It is all handmade, from the folding cover on the outside to all the pages inside. On the inside of the cover I wrote a verse from the book of psalms 78: "What he commanded our ancestors, they were to teach their children; That the next generation might come to know, children yet to be born".

The title on the first page is: Haggadah for Oly family. The Haggadah is usually a thin book with a lot of writing and a few drawings. In this Haggadah I combined the writing with family photos and embellishments that I tried to fit to the text. The first section is "Sanctify", so I added photos of my sister's wedding and mine.

One of the highlights of the Seder is the Four Questions, we are asking: What makes this night different from all other nights? To match the text I added a theme of change: a photo of me and my sister as children and two photos as moms with families.

This section talks about the delivarence from slavery in Egypt, so I embellished the page with birds outside of their cages.

The Haggadah speaks of four children: one wise, one wicked, one simple, and one who does not know how to ask. These four children represent different types of people. This is an important lesson in education: in order to be freed from Egypt (metaphorically) different people need different explanations to be convinced.

The first part of the Haggadah ends with a festive big meal. It is very long so I will post it in parts. We will go to eat and come back on Friday with a full stomach to see part two.
Happy Spring and Easter to everyone!

101 Flowers tutorial: Scraps flower

All of us crafters have a lot of scraps. Paper, buttons, ribbons and all kinds of materials find their way to the trash or to our leftover box. In honor of Passover, which is celebrated today I am spring cleaning my scraps and trying to reuse them for small projects. One of these projects is the #2 tutorial in the series 101 flowers. You can create flowers from many types of scraps and materials here are two ideas:

You will need: a scrap of paper, 1-2 buttons, a ribbon and a piece of leftover transparency (I had a round piece).

1. Stamp the transparency to give it a pattern.

2. Adhere a button to the center. You can add another button on top of it, just to give it a little more creativity.

3. Cut any size petals from the paper scrap, and adhere to the transparency.

4. Ink the edges of the petals and curl them a little.

5. Add doodling and stickles.

6. Cut smaller petals from the scrap paper and insert them between the large petals and the transparency. Ink and curl them as well. As you can see I didn't use the ribbon after all, I'm sure you will have some great ideas for it.

Happy spring and Passover to everyone!

Technique corner – dress up your buttons

One of my favorite techniques in scrapbooking and crafts is to treat a surface. It's a really fun way to change its shape and give it a personal touch. We all know a lot of ideas to treat chipboard, canvas, paper and other materials, but I thought why not treat buttons? Dress them up a little, personalize them and give them a makeover.

Here are a few ideas:

1. Embellish a button as a small tag. Adhere a sentiment and an embellishment on it.

2. Layer a small flower on a button to brighten it up.

3. Sand a button to give it a distressed, worn out look.

4. Create stamens like you would on a flower. Use small bling and rhinestones.

5. Insert brads to a button to add color.

6. Layer two different sizes of buttons to create extra dimension.

7. Put stickles on a button to add some shine to it.

8. Tie a bow on a button to create a soft look.

9. Write sentiments or names on a button to personalize it. Use a very thin marker.

10. Stamp a button with StazOn to give it a new look.

When your buttons are all dressed up they are ready to embellish any creation!

Try it; it will open up a new fun world!

Birthday Blog Candy #2! another chance to win!

It's time for blog candy # 2 in my four birthday blog candies series. But before I show you what kind of goodies wait for you this week I have two important tasks: first, thank all of you for your great birthday stories, wishes and congratulations! You really warmed my heart. Second, announce this week's winner!!

And the candy goes to….

NILI

CONGRATULATIONS girl!

Please send me your address so I can send you all the yummy things.

My favorite birthday was last year, because my eldest son, who was 10 and a half at the time made me an amazing present. He made me a scrapbook all by himself, with photos, embellishments and even journaling. He came to me and said: "Mom, I made a traditional scrapbook for you" (he meant that it's not a digital scrapbook). I was so moved, happy, excited, surprised and very very proud. After all what a better present can a designer like me receive? It wasn't just that he made a scrapbook on his own, putting all his creativity and love into it, there was also a hidden gift, with a hidden meaning…someone was going in my footsteps. Someone feels the same magic I feel. And it's not just anyone…it's my son! What a great feeling.

And with no further delays, here is this week bundle of yummy stuff!

Here's how you can win:

1. Leave me a comment and tell me what was or will be your ideal present.

2. Become a follower of this blog (leave a separate comment telling me this).

3. Subscribe to Scrappin' it (leave a separate comment telling me this).

4. Share my blog candy on your blog/social media site (leave a separate comment telling me this).

Good luck! I'll post the winner next Friday!
