Mixed Media Art Journal Page: 42 is just a number

I'll be celebrating my birthday on Monday and I'll be 42 years old. I don't know why but it feels kind of old. I know in my head I'm young but I loo back at all the things I've done and it seems like it's not enough... So I decided to create an art journal page to cheer myself up and remind myself that 42 is just a number!

I started with creating a numbered texture on white cardstock with Spellbinders M-bossabilities Letters and Numbers folder. I tore some pieces and glued them to the page with gel medium. Then I covered the page with gesso.

I sprayed the page with spray paints and then enhanced the color with matching distress inks. I added more numbers with two sizes of numbers stamps.

Finally I cut the number 42 from patterned paper and added color with the same distress inks I used for the background. I wrote the sentence on a white piece of paper and added everything to the page.

I hope you liked the page and it has inspired you not to think of your age but to feel young because that's what counts!

Mixed Media layout: He is a Teenager

If you have or had a teenager in your house you will know and relate to this post. This is such a crazy age. It seems like there are two different people in one person: on one hand a sweet boy, your little boy and on the other hand an angry, confused defiant boy. This is my boy, at almost 15...and this is a layout I created for him.

I wanted to create a divided layout, a page with two sides. I got the inspiration from the Chalk Studio collection by MME, which has beautiful designs in black and white. I started with the background of the layout and created a black shadow on the left side with black oil pastel and dark brown Gelato.

I added texture and dimension with stencils and stamps in coordinating colors of black and white. I used black acrylic paint for the black patterns and modeling paste and gesso for the white patterns. To combine the two sides together I also sprayed the page slightly with a light brown spray.

Then I added embellishments to complete the theme of the page. The embellishments are also coordinated with the two colors of the layout. On the right side a little more childish vibe with bicycle and starts and the left is more serious with a globe and a balloon symbolizing an independent man of the world. Make sure to watch the step by step video tutorial with the complete process of creating the layout.

Mixed Media Art Journal Page - Journey

I have a new art journal that I'm really excited to start! I decided that the pages in the new journal will have a theme. It seem to be more challenging and inspiring this way. The first page is all about the journey...a fitting subject for the first page of a new journal.

I started with coloring the background with two shades of blue Gelatos. They mix very well together when you wet them a little and use a baby wipe. I added some texture to the background with dimensional paint and a stencil. I drew a few clouds with a white oil pastel.

Then I created the mountain by adding layers of tissue paper. I also added a trail with a brown oil pastel. I cut my image from an old photo and glued it on top of the mountain. I stamped some houses on white cardstock and colored them with Gelatos. I cut them and glued them to the page.

Finally I added a stamped quote. Check out the step by step video tutorial!

Having Fun with Burlap

I recently got the 6X6 Burlap Paper stack by MME and decided to play with it. I tried different materials and techniques on it and I have some conclusions.

I sprayed the first page with color sprays. I have to say the shimmer is only slightly showing because the burlap is basically a type of fabric with large holes that absorbs all the shimmer. However paper glues to it with no problems. Foe some reason burlap reminded me of vintage so I embellished all the pages with a vintage look patterned paper scraps.

The second page was stenciled with acrylic paint. I recommend using a large stencil pattern because a smaller pattern will not be visible.

The last page was sprayed and finger colored with acrylic paint. I also added more paint with Gelatos. I cut a burlap with a Large Sizzix die, which worked beautifully. However I also tried cutting the burlap with a Spellbinders die and that didn't work at all.

Make sure to watch the step by step video tutorial to see how much fun I had playing with the burlap papers and how I did all the techniques.
